Jennifer Webb, Artist in residence at Port Art , has been consistently creating paintings of Melbourne city, portraying various water views around Melbourne CBD since her nostalgic return from living outside of Australia. Seeing Melbourne through new eyes had renewed her long-term endearment to the city as a source of inspiration in her paintings. Other subjects appear in her series (including a long-term ocean series and also figures). READ MORE about the artist.
Throughout the last 15 years, the skylines have gradually developed into her “ rectangularist” signature style. The Melbourne skylines (along with other city skylines) still inspire but the scenes have been stripped back and reinterpreted into their most basic and essential shapes. These studies in implied line, form and colour have very little of the figurative detail of her previous Melbourne paintings, but all of the textures, ambience and mood with hints of recognisable landmarks as subtle yet significant focal points.
Other city-inspired series are now underway and her long-standing ocean-inspired series continues as do figure paintings when the impulse strikes. You can also Commission a Jennifer Webb skyline inspired by the city of your choice.
