At Port Art, over the last 18 years, we have facilitated many artwork commissions for both homes and offices, including specialised paintings in unique materials for the outdoors. If you decide to commission an artist from the Port Art collective, please use the form on the link just below.
The keys to success have been the following:
🎨 Be clear about which artist you wish to commission and study all of their series online or in person at the art rooms (if you are Melbourne-based). Ask for a private Zoom virtual browsing session if you are more distant. You can see all kinds of options virtually on your own walls.
🎨 If you are more than one person (eg. a couple, family or a corporate body) it is vital that one representative (only) be chosen (after discussing and agreeing on all specifications as outlined below). No artist can take a clear brief when it is coming from different sources with (naturally) different expectations.
🎨 Consider the size and format that you need, measure the wall in width and height, and take some photos. We can send you a Zoom link to have a video consultation and easily view some artwork on your walls, which can make it easier to decide on details for your commission. ie. size, format, scheme, key etc. Outdoor artwork can also be commissioned in exactly the same way.
🎨 Some of the most important visual aspects to discuss will be the following
* which criteria does your chosen artist leave up for their clients to decide (some artists will only accept an artwork commission if they retain full creative control, while others are somewhat open and quite negotiable with some aspects of their work. All of this needs to be agreed upon upfront.)
* Size and orientation/ format
* Colour scheme
* Value pattern and key (how dark or light in general)
* General subject and theme (eg. ocean, figures, abstracts, skylines), inclusions, exclusions
* Framed or unframed
* Payment options and terms
🎨 Custom Framing can be arranged as well to help protect and display your commissioned artwork, but also to marry it into its new decor.
🎨 Delivery and installation: these services can be also booked, or you can collect your artwork if you have an appropriately sized vehicle.
FAQS
Q. We saw a work on your website that we liked but it is already sold. Can the artist create another of this one for us?
A. Our artists do not create an original artwork more than once. They do, often, work in series, so there is a possibility that you could reserve first preview of the next artwork in that particular series if it is still in progress. The very nature of a series is that an idea or concept is explored (or re-created) across this same idea, so if you request certain preferences in the theme's motifs, colour schemes, size, materials etc, you are likely to be able to collaborate to a certain point within the framework that the artist created, to achieve your ideal piece.
Q. I love this work (in the stockrooms). Could you get the artist to add some pink to it?
A. We do get asked this from time to time.🤣 The most appropriate response to this is not really!!. A finished artwork is not usually up for re-invention. If a particular colour is desired, it would be best to ask for this within a new commission setting. Some artists do offer custom requests of colour inclusions or exclusions within a commission, others don’t want to veer away from their established palette.Q. I love this painting that my friend has, can one of your artists paint something similar for me?
Q. Can I pay for an artwork commission in instalments?
A. There are a few options for paying over a time period (6-8 weeks lay-by). or ArtMoney over 10 months
